If Youth Protection Training has not been taken prior to the Okama course, it will be possible to complete this requirement during the course.
Everything that Blackfoot training is in the Spring, Okama is in the Fall. This type of training is still the best interactive indoor and outdoor learning experience, taught by an experienced and enthusiastic staff. This enhanced course allows Parents, Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters, Committee Chairmen, Chartered Organization Representatives, Committee Members, Webelos Leaders and Den Leaders to “live” Scouting and learn by doing. It helps Webelos Leaders, Cub Leaders and parents to prepare early for their sons’ “Crossing Over” into Scouting. This Is Scouting...
This Is Scouting is an online interactive learning experience that is divided into six modules. It picks up where Fast Start left off and introduces participants to the following areas of the Scouting program.
Mission, Vision, and Values
Programs for All Ages and Abilities
Scouting Is Fun!
Scouting in the Community
Protecting Our Youth
Scouting’s Legacy
This Is Scouting replaces New Leader Essentials, and can be found on the Online Learning Center on olc.scouting.org. It takes about an hour to complete, and it is also available on DVD (No. 36118). Participants must correctly answer questions at the end of each module, and upon successful completion, they will receive a certificate of completion. The training code for This Is Scouting is WAO1.
Leader Specific Training
Once a volunteer has a solid overview of the BSA's values-based program, he or she can begin training for a specific Scouting position through Leader Specific training. This training provides the specialized knowledge a new leader needs to assume a leadership role. For troop committee members, Leader Specific training includes the Troop Committee Challenge. By following the Troop Committee Training Syllabus, participants can complete the challenge in three hours, after which they are considered trained.
Additional Trainings Available on the Online Learning Center Include:
- Youth Protection Training - required for all leaders including Merit Badge Counselors
- Trek Safely
- Climb On Safely
- Safety Afloat
- Safe Swim Defense
- Hazardous Weather Training
