100th Anniversary

The Boy Scouts of America's 100th anniversary represents much more than a date on the calendar. It represents an important milestone around which to reintroduce Scouting to America – to celebrate our rich heritage and to reinforce the important role Scouting will play in shaping our country's future.

Scouting is as vital and relevant today as it was when our journey began.

Help us celebrate! If you are—or were—a Scout, family member of a Scout, BSA volunteer, or just someone who Scouting has positively impacted, you’re invited. There are a number of local opportunities for you to take part in our once-in-a-lifetime celebration.

National Celebration Activities

National Hall of Leadership

Deadline Extended until April 2, 2010

SUBMIT YOUR NOMINATIONS

Leaders are those who see possibilities and inspire others to see them too. Over the past century, Scouting leaders have inspired millions of Americans to dream more, do more, and become more. They have shaped our nation’s youth by modeling Scouting virtues. And now we have a way to thank them.

The BSA 100th Anniversary National Hall of Leadership provides a one-time opportunity for you to honor and recognize a Scouting leader who positively impacted your life, or the lives of others. To be nominated, a person must be a living Scout or Scouting volunteer who may or may not be officially registered with the BSA. They must have served as an active Scout or Scouting volunteer for at least one year. A nominee may be young or old — there is no age limit — and you can submit as many nominations as you'd like.

The nomination period is open for one year, from February 8, 2009 to April 2, 2010. One inductee will be selected from each local BSA council in the country along with one from the national office. Inductees will be announced at the BSA National Annual Meeting in Dallas in May 2010.

Our country will never outgrow the need for thoughtful leadership. And, so it will never outgrow the need for those dedicated individuals who live their lives by the Scout Law and teach others to do the same. Please, take some time to tell the story of a leader who inspired you.

Geocaching
Get in the Game! with Geocaching

For our 100th Anniversary Celebration, the BSA is tapping into the outdoor fun and excitement of geocaching and inviting you along for the adventure! Through Get in the Game! geocaching events, Scouts and non-Scouts alike will search for prizes in this fast-paced orienteering quest. It's a great way to share interesting and useful Scouting skills — and outdoor adventure — with today's tech savvy kids.

What is geocaching?
Put simply, it's a high-tech treasure hunt. Players hide containers, called "caches" or "geocaches," outdoors and then share the coordinates. Then, other players seek them out using GPS navigation devices. It's fun, challenging, and interesting for individuals, families, and groups.

What do we need?

  • GPS units work well, and several retailers offer discounts to Scout groups. There are also several geocaching apps for the iPhone, and some other cell phones work too. You'll also need a map and compass. The technology only takes you so far. When you get closer to a cache site, traditional orienteering skills come into play.
  • To build a cache, all you need is a piece of paper to serve as a log book, Scouting goods like patches and photos, and a plastic container. If you're resourceful, it might not cost you anything at all.

Get in the Game! Activities
The BSA has developed five geocaching activities for the Get in the Game! program.

  • Pillars of Scouting — "Travel Bugs®" that go from cache to cache around the nation to highlight core Scouting values.
  • Cache to Eagle® — BSA districts across America are hiding caches to showcase some of Scouting's great gifts to America, Eagle Scout service project sites. Learn how this program started at Geoscouting.com.
  • Treasures of Scouting — Caches around the country that showcase Scouting people and programs: Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturing, Scouting Alumni, and Volunteers.
  • Race to 2010 — Pinewood Derby cars will soon be zooming around the nation! More information coming soon.
  • Cache In Trash Out — Partnering with Geocaching.com, a single day of service throughout America. More information coming soon.

Geocachers  — want to help Scouts “Get in the Game”?
If you're an active geocacher interested in helping Scouts and Scouters in your area, we'd love your help. Contact the 100th Anniversary Staff Adviser at your BSA local council office to enroll in the 100th Anniversary National Leadership Team. Help bring the fun and adventure of geocaching to youth in your community!

A Year of Celebration Patch

For 100 years, the Boy Scouts of America has created a strong foundation of leadership, service, and community for millions of America's youth. Through A Year of Celebration, A Century of Making a Difference, we will demonstrate the incredible impact of a century of living the Scout Law.

Program participants will earn recognition for making a difference in their communities due to their dedication to five of Scouting's core values: Leadership, Character, Community Service, Achievement, and the Outdoors. Through that commitment, participants can earn each of five award ribbons to display from our 100th Anniversary commemorative patch.

A Year of Celebration will take place from September 1, 2009 through December 31, 2010. The program is open to all Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers, adult leaders, and Scouting alumni. Read the patch requirements to learn more.
